Sea Shepherd News: Live dogs and Cats Used to Lure Sharks

October 6 , 2005

Dear Friend of Sea Shepherd,

I just recently returned from South Africa where I was a guest of the Hermanus Whale Festival. I also had the opportunity to meet with Francois Hugo of Seal Alert – SA to discuss our cooperative efforts to protect South African fur seals.

This past week, the first arrest was made on the island of La Reunion of an individual using live dogs or cats as bait for sharks. He was to appear in court this week and we will keep you apprised of the situation. You can voice your concerns to those responsible listed on our website.

This Saturday, October 8th, Sea Shepherd will be participating with dozens of other organizations worldwide in Japan Dolphin Day – an international protest against the slaughter of over 20,000 dolphins that takes place each year in Japan beginning in October. There are demonstrations scheduled at Japanese consulates and embassies around the world. Please join other Sea Shepherd members, friends, and dolphin lovers at a rally in your city – you can find the contact person and location for your protest on our website.

For those of you in the Pacific Northwest, you probably know that the Makah plan a return to whale killing. Sea Shepherd member and volunteer Mark Gluth is coordinating a group of Sea Shepherd members and friends to attend the October 11th hearing in Seattle to voice their opposition. We anticipate that we will be reading a letter written by Sea Shepherd Board of Advisor member Linda Gawaundukquay Fisher at the hearing. Please contact volunteer@seashepherd.org for details on how you can participate. For those who cannot attend the hearings, you can submit your comments by mail, fax, or email by October 24, 2005. You can use the article, Twelve Reasons to Oppose the Plans by the Makah Whalers to Murder Whales, to help you to formulate your comments.

The Seal of Approval Campaign and contest is entering its final weeks. The success of the campaign has been largely due to the tireless volunteers who are working to promote the Canadian Seafood Boycott. Thank you all for your efforts on behalf of the seals.

In the Galapagos, our fast patrol boat the Sirenian is being overhauled and refitted. We are renewing our agreement with the National Park to patrol and intercept illegal fishing activities. Our engineer, Charles, has rejoined the crew of the Farley Mowat in the Galapagos, as we make final assessments, acquire materials for our long ocean journey, and refuel. We should be ready to leave for Australia by weeks-end.

Your continued support will insure that we will be positioned and fully outfitted to head from Australia to the waters of the Southern Ocean Sanctuary in late December to oppose the Japanese slaughter of whales. Their ruthless killing vessels hunt and murder these beautiful creatures in one of the few designated places where whales are supposed to be able to live and breed in peace. We appreciate all your support in our efforts.

For the Oceans,

Captain Paul Watson
