City of Richmond Awards Shelter Contract to RAPS!

Richmond's mayor and council voted unanimously on January 8, 2007 to make our organization their new partner, following more than 20 years with the BCSPCA.

RAPS will take charge of Richmond Animal Shelter on No. 5 Road as of February 1, beginning a 2-year term of service. We look forward to the challenges and rewards that await us in this exciting new endeavor!

City staff choose RAPS for shelter contract!

City of Richmond staff have recommended to Mayor and Council "That the City enter into a contract with the Richmond Animal Protection Society for shelter operation and partial animal control services for a two year term." The recommendation was approved by the City's Community Safety Committee on Tuesday, December 12. A final decision is expected January 8.

We bid on the City's animal shelter contract, because we want to change the approach to sheltering homeless and problem animals in our community.

We will counsel Richmond residents about pet behaviour problems and encourage dog owners to seek the help of professional trainers before surrendering their pets to our shelter. Surrendered local animals will receive effective training and have time for rehabilitation, or recovery from illnesses, and much greater prospects for adoption to new homes.

We look forward to serving the citizens of our city by responding quickly and compassionately to their concerns. We plan to enhance levels of service through much needed community outreach programs, making it easier for seniors and low-income families to manage and enjoy their companion animals. We will help them find affordable veterinary care, and provide subsidized spay/neuter services to those in need.

It is our goal to rally Richmond animal lovers to adopt their municipal animal shelter, become volunteers and work together with us to transform the city shelter into a place of hope for all of the animals who enter its doors.
