In response to Mr Gerald Martin going to the media and telling how the New Westminster pound was using a gas box to kill cats and other animals, Councillor Lorie Williams served the following Notice of Motion on September 17, 2007 re Animal Policy Proposals

MOVED and SECONDED

THAT staff investigate other jurisdictions in order to:

1. Craft a spay and neuter bylaw for all dogs and cats in the City

2. Formally adopt a no-kill policy unless the animal is terminally ill, deemed vicious by independent assessment or severely injured as determined by a veterinarian

3. Require that all cats have identification tags or tattoos to facilitate the control of stray and feral cats; and

4. Begin a volunteer program at the City Animal Shelter to help with such needs as walking dogs and the care of cats if this is deemed necessary by the City’s animal control staff.

All members of Council voted in favour of the motion.
