Volkswagen's Experiments on Songbirds: Farfromhuman
Motor City Protests Target VW Foundation's Deadly Songbird Experiments

Hold a leafleting event at your local Volkswagen dealer

IDA recently launched a campaign to persuade the automaker Volkswagen to pressure the VW Foundation to stop financing cruel and deadly experiments on songbirds conducted at the University of Oldenburg in Germany and Duke University in North Carolina. Both wild-caught and captive songbirds are used for the experiments, in which researchers cut their victims' heads off and slice out their brains and retinas out of their eyes seeking clues to the secret of migration. IDA is collaborating with Doctors Against Animal Experiments in Germany to stop these horrific and senseless experiments.

As a demonstration of our determination, IDA held a protest last week to kick off our campaign in Volkswagen's hometown, Detroit, Mich. As IDA handed out flyers to passerby, people expressed their outrage that the VW Foundation has been wasting money on beheading innocent birds instead of using it for projects that are actually aimed at helping struggling people all over the world.

The Volkswagen Foundation has funded many other experiments on animals as well, and we want Mr. Jacoby, the VW automaker's President and CEO, to pressure the foundation to end them all. We've asked him to start with the birds, and from there we will work with the company to make sure that the Volkswagen Foundation, which does many good things, stops funding all deadly projects.

What You Can Do:

- If there is a Volkswagen dealership in your area, organize an outreach event to let people know what the company is doing to songbirds. Print copies of IDA's VW leaflet to hand out or order a supply from our literature department. Contact Melissa Gonzalez at melissa@idausa.org or (415) 388-9841, ext. 228 for more information.

- Please Take Action, if you haven't already, to send a polite message to Stefan Jacoby, VW President and CEO asking him to use his influence to earmark funds for research that does not entail the use of animals.

- Watch a video of the experiments in which birds with reflective tape on their heads are filmed before being decapitated.
