Not surprisingly, so are increasing numbers of Yukon women!

Excerpt from current (Fall 2008) issue of North of Ordinary magazine article "If the camo fits..." by Wayne Potoroka]:

Yukon trailblazer, Martha Black, was an avid hunter and this distinguished her from her peers. These days, more and more Yukon women are taking to the hunt. From learning through government courses and picking up the sport with friends and partners, Yukon women are keen to pack up and trek into the woods.

There is a well-known picture of Martha Black, the Yukon's first lady from 1912 to 1915 when her husband was the commissioner of the territory, and the second-ever woman elected to the House of Commons, in 1935. She's standing outdoors amidst furry foxtail grass, dressed in bulging jodhpurs, a slim-fitting Norfolk jacket and what looks to be a paisley-print silk ascot.

In the gloved left hand of this Yukon socialite bred of Chicago high society is a very unladylike double-barrelled shotgun; in her right, a stringer of limp birds, mostly ptarmigan and wildfowl, a decent take for anyone after a day's worth of hunting.
