How many animals is the SPCA killing? Animal-lover and SPCA supporters deserve answers

How many cats did the Maple Ridge SPCA just kill? How many this year? How many in the past ten years? Do mass killings like those at the Kamloops SPCA 2005 in and the Comox SPCA in 2006 still go on? How many dogs is the SPCA killing and for what reasons? All questions that animal-lovers and SPCA supporters deserve answers to. The SPCA has a duty to its donators to give those answers. It has a duty to its donators to tell them for what reasons it kills animals. It has a duty to its donators to tell them how much money its head office staff and managers make. But it is silent on all these issues.

Earlier this year we were contacted by an SPCA cat foster home volunteer who told us how the manager phoned her in a panic because the SPCA's Chief Vet was expected any moment to make sure that many cats, some with colds, some only exposed to the cats with colds, were killed. The volunteer met the manager in the SPCA's parking lot and they filled her car with as many cats as they could, but could not take them all. She never found out if the rest were killed.

Another ex-SPCA volunteer wrote us: 'Dogs are often considered dangerous simply because of neglect and lack of exercise – it is therefore up to societies like the SPCA to work towards rehabilitating these animals in order to be adopted out to good, caring homes. However, my experience with the SPCA in the past years has been that they do "what they please as they please". I once asked someone who worked there why some animals were put to sleep immediately upon being dropped off, and the response I got was “it depends who’s working that day”. Clearly, not all of these people are working towards a good cause or the greater good of our innocent animals.'
