CALGARY - Calgary police are investigating after a horse trailer tipped over on Calgary's Deerfoot Trail early Friday morning, killing more than a dozen horses.

The trailer, carrying 44 horses, tipped over onto its side in the centre median at approximately 6:30 a.m. local time.

Firefighters had to cut into the three-chambered trailer and open each area individually to remove the horses. While some horses were able to walk out on their own, several had to be removed with ropes.

Eight horses died or had to be euthanized on scene, while an additional four horses were taken to the nearby town of Okotoks to be euthanized.

Deerfoot Trail, the city's major north-south multi-lane route, was reduced to one lane and closed northbound during much of the incident.

The surviving horses have been taken for further medical assessment.
