Call the RCMP if you need quick help for an animal

In October I was trapping feral kittens and their mom behind an apartment building in downtown Vernon. The man who brought the cats to my attention was keeping an eye on the traps for me. On October 20 he phoned me to say that two kittens were trapped in an old motor home. They had been in the motor home for three days. He had spoken to the owner who refused to allow him to put traps in the vehicle or to leave a window partially open so the kittens could escape. I went to check the vehicle which was locked. I talked to other residents of the building who said that the owner of the vehicle worked long hours and was rarely home. Then I phoned the SPCA who recorded my complaint. They told me the cruelty inspector, Bonnie Price, was in Vernon that day and gave me her cell phone number. All I got was her voice mail but I left a detailed message and asked her to call me back. By 4 o'clock that afternoon I'd given up on hearing from the SPCA so I filed a complaint with the RCMP and returned to the apartment to leave a note on the vehicle owner's door telling her that I'd reported the situation to the SPCA and the RCMP. Luckily, she came home while I was taping the note on her door and I was able to convince her to let me set the traps in the motor home. The kittens were in the traps by the next morning and I was able to get them checked by a vet and placed in a foster home.

I still have heard nothing from Price or the BC SPCA. An RCMP constable phoned me about 20 minutes after I filed the complaint. The file number is 2068 - 26937.
