'TransCanada Corp. becomes major Yukon Quest sponsor' - Whitehorse Star, Jan. 21, 2009:

TransCanada Corp., a builder of gas pipelines, has become a major sponsor of the Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race.

TransCanada has been a Quest sponsor since 2007, and recently announced its increase in support by stepping up to the major sponsor level.

No dollar figure was given in a statement announcing the sponsorship today.

"This is a significant development for the Yukon Quest," said Stephen Reynolds, the race's executive director in the Yukon.

"Like many events who rely on sponsorship, the recent economic situation is having an impact on our partners and TransCanada's decision to substantially increase their support strengthens our organization and the race itself."

"The Yukon Quest is a natural fit for TransCanada's community investment program," said Peter Kruselnicki, TransCanada's vice president of public sector relations.

"As the only international marathon sled dog race in the world, it is a unique event that fosters and recognizes the deep bonds uniting northerners in Canada and the United States."

"Yukon Quest aligns with TransCanada's business operations and our community philosophy, and we are proud to take on a more significant role with this renowned event."

The 2009 Yukon Quest will start Feb. 14 in Whitehorse. Teams will take from 10 to 16 days to travel the 1,600 kilometre trail to Fairbanks, Alaska."

Thirty-five dog teams are registered to start the race, with an additional 26 dog teams entered in the Yukon Quest 300, a 300-mile qualifying race for the 2010 Quest.
