Re: Where is the SPCA in this problem?

To this point the SPCA is only involved to the point where they can review or agree or disagree on what is considered to be a HUMANE method of euthanasia. They have also publically spoke out against the cull as far as I know.

I have met with them when the Richmond rabbits were going through the same thing and was told they could only review the recommendations made to council by the exterminators.

The problem for the rabbits is LARGER than just the feral colonies. The rabbits currently *in the system* are at risk. Many shelters have a limit of 3-10 rabbits and that's all they will take. Again it is the individual staff members that are trying to get help for the bunnies and work hard to try get the rabbits in to a rescue group. I am grateful to have people working in the system looking out for the small ones....this is a BIG change since I first started out volunteering.

The system as a whole is not set up, nor never was and may never be set up for the small animals. It really falls to the rescue groups, and even then, the few that do exist, 90% of them won't help either. Don't get me started on that one!!

We have been contacted by other SPCA's outside the lower mainland that are going to be facing the same crisis Kelowna is currently going through - they want to see how they can nip it in the bud. Again, this is done on an individual level or a shelter level not at an organizational level.

Problem is the rabbits are a real problem and no one wants to take the challenge on...some do but after awhile, they too are gone as it is just too big a problem for most to handle.

Publically, no one gives a damn....most find it a joke to *save* the rabbits, others take the opportunity to go out and try kill or torture them themselves. Rabbits live in the grey area of livestock/fur source/food source/domestic pet/kids starter pet....cheap & disposable.

Often the public views on small animals frustrate me more.
