ACTION ALERT: Park Board to vote on whale and dolphin plebiscite Monday July 19, 7 pm

ACTION ALERT

Topic: The Vancouver Park Board will discuss a motion, at its upcoming meeting on July 19th, to hold a “whale and dolphin plebiscite ” during the 2011 Vancouver civic election.

The meeting will be held at the Park Board Office: Monday July 19, 2010 at 7:00pm, 2099 Beach Avenue, Vancouver, BC

The public has the right to speak to the motion. Those interested have to sign on to the speaker’s list, from now till noon on Monday.
To get on the speaker’s list phone Sharla Hay, at 604-257-8452.

It is important that we have as many people as possible speaking eloquently in favour of the plebiscite. Please sign up today.

The motion will be introduced by Commissioner Stuart MacKinnon and seconded by Commissioner Loretta Woodcock. We have heard that Commissioner Constance Barnes will vote in favour.

This means that we need one more vote in favour and Vancouverites will finally have the long sought after oppportunity to express their opinion on this issue.

Our message needs to be simple. Captivity of these intelligent social beings in any human institution is by definition inhumane. There is no educational or scientific justification for keeping dolphins in confinement. The citizens of Vancouver should have the right to express their opinion on this issue directly through a plebiscite.

Even if you don’t plan to speak, please come to the meeting.

A second action you can take today is to go to www.whalefriends.org and click on the ready set letter to the Commissioners.

Full text of the motion:
Whereas at a special board meeting dated Nov.27,2006 the Vancouver Park Board passed a motion to review the Parks Control By-Law relating to captive cetaceans in 2015

And whereas the residents of Vancouver value the ability to express their views on relevant issues of the day

And whereas a plebiscite is a non binding democratic tool to survey the public sentiment

Therefore be it resolved that a plebiscite be held during the 2011 Vancouver civic election asking the public if they are in favour of ending the containment of cetaceans in Vancouver parks, including the phase out of existing cetacean exhibits which are located on land leased by the Park Board.

Please help.
