WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT TO HELP END THE NIGHTMARE FOR THE ANIMALS AT UBC
Every year, thousands of experiments are performed at the University of British Columbia (UBC) involving animals, including on rats, mice, monkeys, rabbits, cats, pigs, and more. UBC researchers have forced fluid into the lungs of newborn pigles to induce respiratory failure, administered electroconvulsive shock to monkeys, exposed mice to cigarette smoke, cut open the backs of cats, and beheaded wild songbirds. Much of that research is funded with taxpayer money and nearly all is conducted behind closed doors without public scrutiny.

Stop UBC Animal Research blows the whistle on UBC
Few Vancouver residents were even aware experiments were being done on animals inside the tree-lined, tranquil buildings on UBC's campus. That is, until Stop UBC Animal Research was formed. Since launching in February, Stop UBC Animal Research has had some remarkable accomplishments - all the more impressive given we are an all-volunteer campaign with little money. For instance, we have:

Been featured on the front-page of the Vancouver Sun. The article, “UBC fears animal activists’ campaign” exposed UBC’s research on animals and alerted the public that a new watchdog for the animals – Stop UBC Animal Research – was in town.

Been featured in a cover story in the UBYSSEY, “Animal rights advocates shine spotlight on UBC”

Appeared on CBC’s “On the Coast” and numerous times on talk radio station, CKNW

Coordinated a coalition letter to UBC. The letter, signed by more than sixty animal and social justice groups across Canada, the US, and Europe, received extensive media coverage throughout Canada.

Submitted numerous freedom of information requests to obtain details about UBC’s animal experiments. The university has denied two of those requests and has yet provided any information in response to our remaining requests. We have appealed UBC’s decisions.

Reached out to the UBC businesses. To build coalitions with diverse interests, Stop UBC Animal Research has met with more than 40 small businesses on the UBC campus.

Run two ads in the UBC student newspaper

Launched our website, www.stopubcanimalresearch.org

Developed educational and outreach materials including factsheets, banners, and T-shirts

Held peaceful, silent protests at UBC functions, along with a creative demonstration at the Vancouver Art Gallery. The VAG event was covered widely by media, including nearly every major TV news network in Vancouver, the Province, Vancouver Sun, News1130, CBC radio, CKNW, and international news wire services.

And much, much more.

But we need your help if we are to achieve our ultimate goal of ending experimentation on animals at UBC. By becoming a formal member of Stop UBC Animal Research you will help us to strengthen our campaign by hiring much-needed staff, developing additional educational materials, building coalitions with diverse interests, upgrading our website, generating media, organizing more fun, creative demonstrations and public events, and raising awareness about UBC's research activities.
