The BC SPCA can't have it both ways. Either the CVMA kennel standards are official or they aren't.
In January this year BC SPCA president Rick Sargent denied that the CVMA kennel standards are officially adopted by the BC SPCA. And yet in November of last year the BC SPCA sent Shawn Eccles, its Chief Animal Protection Officer, to inspect the Pat Bay Capital Regional District pound using the CVMA standards. Carol Sonnex of Victoria, who has seen both the CRD and the Victoria SPCA facilities, says, "The CRD pound passed with flying colours. It's not a pet palace but the animals are probably better cared for than in the majority of SPCAs. CRD buys the same food all the time, cats now have 3 separate areas, they have separate ventilation systems."
The SPCA uses the standards to bully its competition but denies that they are official - even though two of its directors, Red Lawrence and David Wooldridge are BC SPCA representatives of the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies, one of the drafters of the standards.
It is doubtful that any SPCA facility would meet the standards so perhaps it is just as well not to adopt them yet.
