Gail Moerkerken of Maple Ridge, BC is one of the women who won't be silent about the SPCA. Women like her are why the SPCA has been forced to say they are going to reform. For fifty years, hundreds of women "animal rescuers" knew what was wrong with the SPCA but remained silent out of fear that the SPCA would stop their work. Their silence meant the SPCA would go on forever, avoiding its mandate to prevent cruelty. The few who tried to speak out were not heard and were dismissed by a credulous media and public who believed the SPCA when they said that the complainers were "radical activists" or "disgruntled former volunteers or directors". But a new breed of woman knew that speaking out was the only way to change what they were horrified by, and the AAS web site was the forum that brought all the evidence together. AAS took three years to do undercover investigations, getting the proof that the way the SPCA behaves is actual policy , connected all the dots so that the truth could not be ignored or denied any longer. We paid heavily for that. The SPCA tired to muzzle me, the person who was really "speaking for those who cannot speak for themselves" by hiring a QC lawyer to threaten me with personal ruin if I did not remove the allegations from our web site. I responded by putting up more, even worse horror stories about the SPCA and threatening to keep putting up evidence until the SPCA reformed. The SPCA blinked.
