PRINCE RUPERT - "Black and white Pyrenees puppy in Prince Rupert seeks a shared ride to Vancouver."

That could be the wording of an ad placed by the Prince Rupert SPCA as it seeks people travelling to Prince George or Vancouver to take unwanted pets with them.

Volunteer Louise Postulo is organizing a program where people driving to Prince George or flying south can volunteer as escorts to help dogs and cats from the north coast reach shelters in the Lower Mainland where there is a high demand for pets.

Cats and dogs are already heading east to Prince George in a van jointly sponsored by Petcetera and the SPCA but the animal care society still needs pet chaperones to fly with animals to the Lower Mainland.

The SPCA will crate the animals for road trips or flights, and make the arrangements. All the volunteers have to do is escort the animals from one city to the other.
