Irene also rescues cats, though she had no money to sterilize them. People dump cats on her and she won't take them to the SPCA where she knows most will be killed and the SPCA has never offered to do free or even inexpensive spay neuter and so Irene's cat population grew to over fifty.

Recently many little cat rescue groups got together and took most of Irene's cats and got them sterilized and are rehoming them. Not one will be killed unlike they would be if they had ended up at an SPCA. The SPCA takes all the credit and the money and the little groups do the work, spend the money and some are punished by the SPCA by being raided by the SPCA's cops. Think about that. No wonder so many people hate the SPCA so much.
