A Cobble Hill family is urging whoever shot and killed their beloved family dog to come forward and face the consequences.

Rick James says he found the family's 15-year-old Jack Russell cross, Cindi, hunched over in a neighbour's ditch last week.

"When I picked her up out of the car I realized I had blood on my hands," said James. "We took her to the Mill Bay vet and X-rays showed she had been shot with a pellet gun."

Despite treatment and fluids, the dog died from her injuries.

"I just couldn't believe it," said Stephanie James. "It's horrible that someone would do that to such a little dog."

The family has lived in their quiet Cobble Hill neighbourhood for 16 years, and have no idea why someone would have shot their dog.

Police have opened up a file, and if enough information is collected an animal-cruelty charge is expected.

Meanwhile, the family is putting up posters urging the person responsible to come forward.

"I would like them to come and apologize to my kids, to me," said Rick James, "and find out 'Why would you do that?' It's appalling."
