Carol Sonnex is the person who has made the difference to so many animals in so many ways

Carol Sonnex is the long-time volunteer administrator of Greater Victoria Animal Crusaders (GVAC) and an short-term employee of the Capital Region District pound (CRD pound) where she has in a very short time, changed the culture of the CRD pound from a dog and cat disposal business, to the beginning of an animal welfare agency.

Carol quickly went to work puting together a terrific volunteer group who walk the dogs, foster dogs and cats, built a website to find homes for CRD animals, made physical improvements to the pound and had GVAC help to pay bills for dogs and cats that always would have been killed before Carol was hired.

It has not been easy. What we call "pound culture", the easy killing of all animals that are not claimed or quickly sold, was as entrenched at the CRD as it is in every pound that has not been reformed.

The District of North Vancouver, the City of Coquitlam, and the Corporation of Delta, all reformed their pounds by getting rid of the SPCA as their pound contractor and running their own much more humane pounds.

We wish Carol the strength to carry on her amazing work at the CRD pound. Without her, the innocent creatures at the CRD pound will go back to being just "disposable pound animals".
