Couple plead guilty to animal cruelty

RICHMOND - Run Li and Kwai Chan, who both pleaded guilty to animal cruelty, can't own a pet for a year and have to pay $250 each.

That's the sentence Judge Ron Fratkin handed down to the former owners of Jiji, a rottweiler puppy, in Richmond provincial court Thursday.

"When you are fortunate enough to be able to have a pet, you have to treat it properly and fairly," Fratkin said.

The dog had been kept inside a plastic Rubbermaid container and chained to an anvil outside the couple's Richmond home. Holes were cut inside the box so air could get through.
