Re: Patent on Animals??

Hello Robert

We absolutely have to share what we recently
learned. In August 2005, it was reported in the
news media that Monsanto Corporation of St. Louis
now has its hubris sights set on (get this)
patenting mammals. Monsanto has filed patents on
the pig.

A Greenpeace researcher who monitors patent
applications, Christoph Then, uncovered several
patent applications Monsanto filed in February with
the World Intellectual Property Organization in
Geneva. The patents cover not only methods of
breeding pigs, but on actual breeding herds of pigs
as well as the offspring that result.

"If these patents are granted, Monsanto can legally
prevent breeders and farmers from breeding pigs
whose characteristics are described in the patent
claims, or force them to pay royalties", said
Then in a Greenpeace news release.

One of the patent applications refers to pigs in
which a certain gene sequence related to faster
growth is detected, then explained. This is a
variation on a naturally occurring sequence--
Monsanto didn't invent it. This was first
detected in mice and humans. Monsanto wants to
use the detection of this gene sequence to screen
pig populations, in order to find which animals are
likely to produce more pork per pound of feed.

This is Monsanto's first step toward the same kind
of corporate control of an animal line. This is
the same step that Monsanto aggressively pursued
in controlling the various grain and vegetable
seeds. This company is the king pin of genetically
modified seeds and wants control of all the seed
stock in the world not just America.

We thought you might like to know about this appalling
development.
