Even after Iams instituted a "no kill" policy, PETA has discovered that the company has, in fact, allowed its deadly experiments to continue.
In one study, Iams gave University of Kentucky experimenter Geza Bruckner funding to conduct a cruel caloric experiment on cats, knowing full well that often-fatal feline hepatic lipidosis (FHL) would be induced in the cats.
Bruckner admits that the study "rapidly precipitated the development of FHL," a condition for which "the mortality rate for cats even with aggressive nutrition therapy approximates 40% and approaches 90% in untreated cats."
According to the university's animal care research, two cats died and two others were killed after suffering from abnormalities that ranged from a "grossly large spleen" to "diseased kidneys" and "renal disease."
Iams is the quintessential promise-breaker - it claims that it won't kill dogs and cats one minute and then conducts fatal experiments on them the next.
