Most pounds cannot even do business the way they used to, to say nothing of the BC SPCA, due to the internet and volunteers being involved.

Animal welfare is certainly getting in the way of the old population control methods (if you're not sold by Thursday, you're dead) practised by all the pounds, including (until recently), many SPCA pounds. Even so, there are still too many "old timers" in the business who are having a hard time comprehending that there truly is a new way, but they are going the way of the Dodo, thank goodness.

Somehow the SPCA convinced many people that killing the animals was compassionate, but they did successfully for years, but now with more rescues, pounds and ordinary citizens knowing about the success of spay/neuter....the foster home network... and so many animal welfarists shouting from the rooftops, times are a-changing.

Albeit way too slowly, but the SPCA needs to be aware that they do their shaky reputations no good when they judge others when their hands are not clean.

If they don't understand that, they will continue to sink into the abyss of unimportance and risk being replaced with real rescue. I only hope that the alternative rescuers do not choose to build "shelters" as I honestly believe, "if you build it, the public will fill it tomorrow".

For a long, horrible time the SPCA condoned people dumping their pets and even made people think they (the SPCA) were being noble doing it. Now it has to change a whole way of thinking and quickly, or it will go the way of the Dodo too.
