Japanese hunt dolphins for food says journalist

VICTORIA/CKNW(AM980) - As criticism continues over Canada's seal hunt, an American journalist is drawing attention to Japan, where he says they're culling dolphins on the sly.

Journalist Boyd Harnell says the annual mass dolphin hunt is hidden from the public because they'd strongly object to the annual hunt.
According to Harnell's research, over twenty thousand dolphins are killed or captured off the Japanese coast every year, "Create an acoustical wall that disorients the dolphins sonar. And they panic, and then they are able to drive them into a small cove and visciously stab them with spears and knifes. They're screaming and even the babies are killed. It's horrible."

Harnell adds that studies have shown the dolphins to have dangerous levels of mercury, and yet the meat is still sold to the Japanese public as food.
