They were lucky to be able to find a new home where they could take their dog and cats

This is a wonderful story.
It's great that the family chose to find a new home, rather than give up the dog they had saved. Many people would not have done what they did.
But in a way, they were lucky to be able to find a new home where they could take their dog and cats.
At least where I live, it is extremely difficult to find rental accomodation if you live with animals.
Every week, I check the accomadations for rent (I live in a rural area). Most of the ads specify "No pets." Some say, "Cat(singular)OK."
Not everyone who "dumps" their animals has a choice.
Seniors in particular are in a dilemma when they have to move into smaller housing, or "senior's residences," which may insist on either no pets, or only one pet, often with bizarre height restrictions (ie. 15" at the shoulder) for dogs.
