PORT COQUITLAM Environmental protection committee adopts beaver management policy

Port Coquitlam's environmental protection committee has endorsed, in principle, a beaver management policy that puts relocation before trapping.

Staff presented the beaver management policy to the committee at its Wednesday night meeting, after the expiry of a one-year moratorium on
trapping following the death of a family dog last year.

The general idea of the draft beaver management policy "is to leave the habitats in as natural a state as possible.

"Beavers are not disturbed or relocated unless other beaver management methods are not effective and flooding damage has occurred."

According to a report to the committee from director of engineering and operations Francis Cheung, beaver dams have caused flooding problems along Lobb Avenue and Broadway Street, and in the Burns/Dominion areas.
