Lydia is just picking on an easy target so she can be part of the majority. She may have pets, and might even like them, but she doesn't appear to have the inner strength to say something that might cause her to get some negative replies from the majority.

Call me what you want, but if my anmial companions aren't coming, then I'm not going. They're called family pets, and my family always stays together.
