In late July a call to Big Heart Rescue (BHR) from Chilliwack Animal Control (CAC) started a new beginning for a five year old female Maremma now known as Lucy.

CAC had found a badly mauled (either a bear or a cougar) dog and she required immediate medical attention, would Big Heart Rescue help? BHR needed to find a long-term foster home for Lucy and as soon as Holly knew about Lucy's needs she came forward and our organization was able to inform CAC that Lucy would now be lovingly cared for through our non-profit society.

BHR along with many other supporters including Christine (first foster Mom) Holly (second foster Mom) CAC, Animal Advocates Society, German Shepard Rescue, numerous individual donors and Cottonwood Vets began to pull together as a collective team to help this very special soul in desperate need.

At first the prognosis for Lucy was very guarded and it was thought she might lose her rear leg due to the infection and gangrene that had set in but with excellent daily medical care provided by Cottonwood Vets, two separate surgeries and tons of love, darling Lucy was able to show the world that she is a true survivor!

Her intensive recuperation involved dedicated foster Mom Christine staying up night after night to care take for Lucy's physical and emotional needs. This responsibility also meant driving this 138 lb. girl daily to the vets where she would have bandages changed, morphine administered and close monitoring took place to observe the massive infections that were part of her rear back, tail and legs.

As the days progressed Lucy began to demonstrate a feeling of well being by providing those who came in contact with her a gentle nudge and sweet kiss. This neglected, wounded soul accepted the care and compassion of those who crossed her path with grace and forgiveness.

A few short weeks after Lucy's discovery in the woods around Chilliwack, she has now come into the care of her second loving foster Mom Holly and McKenzie Vets who will continue to work on medical rehabilitation to ensure she has the best and brightest future ahead of her.

Big Heart Rescue wishes to send a huge thank you to all those who supported Lucy on her road to recovery and updates will be provided as the days go by.

Lucy's personality is filled with gentleness, acceptance and gratitude. She adores other canines, is happily living with older children and is seeking a perfect match with a new potential family that can provide a loving, indoor, safe environment where her spirit will be nurtured and her soul will soar.
