Will the long-promised new Nanaimo SPCA ever be built?

I do not believe 1.5 million would build an adequate animal shelter. Having been in all types of construction all my working life, some four years ago, I, together with the Nanaimo shelter staff and a pro-bono architect, designed a new shelter, planned to be useful for at least 50 to 75 years (it is a waste of money to design a shelter for anything less), and capable of paying for its own expenses, other than staff salaries. (I still have the plans). This shelter, complete with all necessary equipment, I estimated to cost approx. 4 million.

Today this would probably be closer to 5 million.

The SPCA had already bought the property. I started to make plans for capital fundraising, however the board of directors forbade us to go ahead.

In the meantime the totaly inadequate and outdated structure will yet be in use probably for years to come, and that only due to staff, who perform day to day miracles.
