USDA investigates alleged animal cruelty

(2006-09-21) Federal officials are investigating charges of animal cruelty at an Arkansas poultry plant. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals plans a Little Rock news conference Friday to make public video PETA says shows the shocking abuse of animals at a Butterball turkey plant operated by Con-Agra Foods in Ozark, Arkansas.

PETA claims its undercover investigation found that workers there punched, stomped and otherwise tormented birds. PETA has already turned its evidence over to Franklin County prosecutor David Gibbons. He would not answer any questions from the press, but did fax out a prepared statement saying that the U.S. Department of Agriculture is already conducting an investigation into the allegations. Gibbons says he will take no action until the USDA probe is complete.
