It always amazes me how many times this scenario - black bears against humans, continues to happen, no matter how many times they tell people to be bear responsible. It infuriates me to no end to read that once again a bear could have been shot, and it's cubs left to defend for themselves, just because of ignorant and careless humans, especially when they live in an area that is wildlife sensitive.

People who continue to ignore the warnings that both protect wildlife and humans have only themselves to blame and should suffer the consequences. A hefty fine would fit the bill and make these people think twice about what and who they endanger. If humans must live where nature is most prevalent, where contact between wild animal and humans is inevitable, then they should be held accountable. I would even go a step further and make anyone who lives or plans to live in these areas to take a course in wildlife responsiblity and make it mandatory.

Too harsh? I think it's one of the only ways humans will co-exist with nature. Ninety percent of people just don't care. Making it illegal to be irresponsible and attaching a fine to it will quickly make them the caring type.

It's a shame that these people don't do more. This woman could have lost her dog and suffered a terrible injury herself. Is it really worth the risk? All it takes is a few minutes of cleaning up after oneself and being responsible.
