Horse mutilations leave police baffled
At first, officers thought severed heads in New Westminster belonged to moose

ROBERT MATAS

VANCOUVER -- It was shortly after 1 a.m. The Zamboni driver had been clearing the ice after a busy night at Queen's Park Arena in New Westminster. The driver headed out to the parking lot.

Suddenly, the headlights reflected off a large see-through plastic bag. Inside, the driver saw what he thought looked like the head of a large animal.

Police responded promptly to the call for help and discovered three severed heads in rough shape. It was difficult to figure out how long the remains had been in the lot. The officers thought they were looking at moose. They put the heads in a freezer until the local animal-control officer would be available.

A few days later, the police were told the severed heads were horses. The animals' ears had been cut off.
