VANCOUVER - After months of discussion, and a public consultation, the park board will consider final deliberations on a proposed expansion of the Vancouver Aquarium at a public meeting Monday evening.

The board will also vote on whether to extend the aquarium's lease to 20 years from the start of construction. The public is invited to speak at the meeting.

The aquarium wants to expand its footprint in the park by 1.5 acres, mostly south of the main entrance in an area once occupied by the city's defunct zoo, and build larger pools for its beluga whales, sea lions and dolphins.

The $80-million proposal includes plans for two new galleries, meeting rooms, a larger gift shop and a new restaurant. The plan also includes bringing more whales and dolphins to the aquarium. A staff report on the proposal is available online at www.vancouverparks.ca.

The meeting takes place at 5 p.m. at the Hastings Community Centre, 3096 East Hastings Street. Those wishing to speak at the meeting must register before noon Monday by calling 604-257-8451.
