The spring bear hunt is nearly upon us or should I say the spring bear massacre? Can we please write Premier Campbell and Minister of the Environment Barry Penner (contact info below) to say that this is just wrong. These magnificent creatures deserve to live their lives as bears not hung on a wall or walked on as a rug for a mere trophy. The spring is when bears emerge from their dens with their little ones in tow and usually they just don't stand a chance. Some years ago when I worked at the Vancouver Airport, four hunters got off the plane and headed through customs. They were found to have 26 rifles, night scopes, everything they needed to "blast away at anything that moved" (quoting) plus 4 handguns. They were inebriated when they came through customs and stated they would remain that way throughout the hunt. If you type in spring bear hunt, bc, you will be absolutely blown away by the number of camps offering their expertise to help you achieve a 100% kill rate.
