Animal Advocates Watchdog

Langley Times: Letter from Terrance Veer re Greater Vancouver Zoo

Editor: This is a response to the letter (The Times, Feb. 2) from Peter Fricker of Vancouver Humane Society.
I do not want to debate if zoos are right or wrong. This is one of these social issues that will always have its proponents and opponents.
But I am tired of special interest groups who continually try to foist their beliefs on everyone else. I think it is a noble cause to be a watchdog.
However, when you are continually proven wrong and try to argue your case with bad evidence and then do not accept the situation, it is not only folly, it also shows you have moved beyond being a watchdog and are trying to impose political will.
I was happy to hear that the SPCA has accepted the responsibility for Tina’s death. Forcing the zoo to move her thousands of kilometres to an unfamiliar environment from everything she loved was the most inhumane act done to any of the zoo animals to date.
If you don’t believe that, you have never experienced having a pet for many years and developing a bond with them that can be almost as close as you would have with another person. Being permanently separated from them is very difficult.
I believe the SPCA and humane society have lost all their credibility, and need to re-examine their leadership.
Terrance Veer,
Langley
