An Icelandic-Canadian's Response

As a Canadian of Icelandic descent, I would remind everyone that Japan is not the only country that is engaged in this ridiculous slaughter. Iceland and Norway also wreak their own havoc on whales. I condemn those countries, as well.

Yesterday, it was shown on several newscasts that sealers from our East Coast were in Europe to argue for the plight of losing their livelihood, if the seal "hunt" were discontinued. Two of their representatives were Inuit, arguing that the seal slaughter is traditional and an integral part of their culture.

Whaling is also traditional in Iceland. It is, however, long past the time when such traditions can be tolerated by the Earth and its animals. All traditions that are based on the killing of other species must be condemned and ended. After all, Hammurabi and members of his society believed, traditionally, in an "eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth." Surely it is possible to see through such ridiculous violence in the name of ethics. It is the kind of ethos, if continually practised, that will never see an end to murder and war on this Planet.

It is the kind of ethos that will logically result in the desolation of the entire Planet.
