Regarding your posting regarding Royal Canin Urinary SO and Canin’s Low Fat dietary dog foods. Like you we went through the same hellish experience to save the life of Gracie, our six year old miniature Schnauzer. She had exactly the same symptoms you described for Lizzie’s illness. Thank god that your veterinarian was diligent enough to recognize that there was a correlation between Lizzie’s diet and her symptoms. Our vet continued to recommend Royal Canin for both our dogs and still does to this day. We have the Master Card bills (paid to the same vet) to support the fact that while doing X-rays, blood tests, intensive care, ultrasound and intravenous they continued selling us Royal Canin. The veterinary hospital that has cared for both our dogs for almost seven years never once said anything about any recall of any Royal Canin products. I discovered it myself while researching kidney and urinary problems in Schnauzers on the internet.

When we first took Gracie to the vet they asked more than once if we thought there was any way she could have been poisoned. All this while they were aware, that both our dogs were on a Royal Canin diet and that some of those products had been recalled during the time they were on it.

Angry doesn’t come near to describing how we feel about Royal Canin and the Veterinary Hospital. Like you, because she was suffering terribly and showing no improvement we were almost to the point of having Gracie euthanized but we managed to save our pet with our own tender loving care. We administered electrolytes intravenously at home, force fed her baby food and boiled chicken breast, kept her mouth and gums moist and of course we stopped feeding both our dogs Royal Canin. She has recovered and is her old energetic self today but like you we do worry about the long term effects this may have on her future health.
