Edward S. Duvin, the "Father" of the No-Kill Movement, is speaking here not only of the problem that animal shelters are "doing", but of the current world situation as a whole. As well, he speaks not only to shelters and the world, but to each of us as individuals. Milan Kundera, in "The Unbearable Lightness of Being", postulates the same message. I re-Post it.

"True Human goodness, in all its purity and freedom, can come to the fore only when its recipient has no power. Mankind's true moral test, its fundamental test (which lies deeply form view), consists of its attitude towards those who are at its mercy: animals. And in this respect mankind has suffered a fundamental debacle, a debacle so fundamental that all others stem from it."

And further, Ron Lee, founder of the Animal Liberation Front, abjures:

We have been at war with the other species of the Earth (capitalization my own) since the first hunter set forth with spear into the primeval forest. Human imperialism has everywhere enslaved, oppressed, murdered, and mutilated the animal peoples. All around us lie the slave camps we have built for our fellow creatures, factory farms and vivisection laboratories, Dachaus and Buchenwalds for the conquered speices. We slaughter animals for our food, force them to perform silly tricks for our delectation, gun them down and stick hooks in them in the name of sport. We have torn up the wild places where once they made their homes. Specieism is more deeply entrenched within us even than sexism, and that is deep enough."

Animal Advocates Society of B.C. has added its collective voice to this accurate deposition of the immorality by which we are surrounded here in British Columbia. On every level, individual, collective and societal, if we do not remove ourselves from this "fundamental debacle', we, with all other animals, and the Earth itself, are doomed.
