Re: Polar bear as poster animal, letter to the editor, April 5.

Mary Simon, the president of Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, states her concern that "elevating the listing of the polar bear to 'threatened' will impose arbitrary and scientifically unfounded penalties and hardships upon Inuit." She further claims that such penalties "would have negative impacts on our rights and would undermine our ongoing activities in the sustainable use and conservation of the species."

I suspect that the "ongoing activities" Ms. Simon refers to involve Americans paying huge sums of money to Inuit for the right to kill polar bears.
