Don't let dogs resort to nature
Letter

It's barbaric that the dog population on Kuper Island is put in the position where it could resort to its nature -- to run in packs.
Dogs are loyal to a fault. And to neglect and mistreat these animals to the point they must be culled for the safety of people is beyond disgusting.
With all due respect, the Kuper Island band leaders are clearly not taking a leadership or proactive role by preventing the situation.
If spaying and neutering is not financially viable, then it is irresponsible to bring more dogs into a world where they are destined for neglect, mistreatment and disease -- or to die a horrible death.
The Kuper Island band leaders are being reactive by culling the packs when they feel imminent danger.
They must be educated and enlist the members to join in a more proactive approach -- or perhaps just not allow unaltered dogs on the land.
If these dogs are not pets, then why in heaven's name have them and allow the poor things to multiply?
Dogs are like us, a product of their heredity and environment.
They also have the same feelings we do, although they can not discern what and why they are feeling.
Imagine how they must feel watching each other getting picked off, but not understanding why.
I am of native heritage. And after reading about these dogs, I felt embarrassed and ashamed.
