WEST VANCOUVER- A West Vancouver man has been arrested after a dog walker was attacked and there was an attempt to steal his pet.

West Vancouver police say a man was walking his dog near the Glen Eagles Golf Course , when he was assaulted from behind at 1:10 a.m. Thursday. As he fell to the ground, his assailant snatched the dog.

The dog walker called police as he ran after the male assailant, who dropped the dog and assaulted the man again before fleeing down a trail.

Police, with the help of a Burnaby RCMP dog handler, searched the area but couldn't find the suspect at that time.

A man was arrested at 5:15 a.m. after a police officer spotted the suspect cycling westbound on the Trans-Canada Highway near the Cypress Bowl exit.

Colin Mastin, 39, has been charged with robbery and assault causing bodily harm.
