THE SPCA UNION (CUPE LOCAL 1622) FIGHTS TO PROTECT WHAT IT CALLS "SERVICES".  IT ALLOWS THE PUBLIC TO THINK IT IS TALKING ABOUT ANIMAL WELFARE SERVICES.  READ BELOW TO SEE WHAT KIND OF "SERVICES" IT IS PROTECTING...

If SPCA employees want to protect animal welfare services (as they say) and not just their jobs as dog-disposal contractors, then these people should be glad that municipalities are taking the dog-killing jobs away from them.  These kind-hearted, animal-loving SPCA employees should be urging their bosses at the  BC SPCA to get out of contracts that force them to kill animals.  And if the BC SPCA won't get out of dog disposal contracting, these wonderful, caring employees should all apply for jobs at one of the municipal pounds that is trying hard to not kill animals anymore.  Don't you think?...

The SPCA employees in North Vancouver put out a "flawed" promotional hand-out in an effort to scare North Vancouver Mayors and Councillors and animal-lovers into thinking that animals on the North Shore will not be humanely controlled without the SPCA, click here

Statistics from the  District of North Vancouver:

The following analysis for 1999 is based upon animal processing
statistics finally obtained from the Vancouver Regional Office of the SPCA
for all activities at the District of North Vancouver Pound (two Pound
Contracts and SPCA work).

1999 Analysis

Total payment by the District in 1999

12,586 lbs.. at .35 c per pound $4,499.60

Breakdown of statistics provided by the SPCA for 1999

Cats Dogs Total

Euthanized animals not adopted 31 14 45

Dead on arrival 71 18 89

Sub total re impounded animals 102 32 134

Euthanized at owners request 114 82 196

Grand total 216 114 330

1999 Analysis; statistics PROJECTED INTO POUNDAGE (this is a guess)

Impounded Dogs say at 60 lbs.. each 32 x 60 = 1920

Impounded Cats say at 10 lbs.. each 102 x 12= 1224

Total Pound work cats/dogs 3144

Add

Private Euthanizations of dogs/ cats

for which the SPCA would have already been paid

Dogs 82 x 60 = 4920

Cats 114 x 12 = 1368

6288

Grand total of poundage of 330 animals 9432

Assumed other road kill animals???? 3,154

Total poundage paid for solely by the District as above 12,586

(3154 lbs. of other animals appears high - checks were made with our
Engineering Department re other road kill, Checks were made with the Port
and Highways and no records could be found to substantiate "large animals"
i.e. seals, deer, raccoons which Jeff Lawson said had boosted the amount of
poundage of dead animals to the amount claimed and paid for by the District.
They are supposed to keep Animal Logs so why not immediately substantiate
other large animals found dead? In any event the District should not pay for
animals found dead in other jurisdictions - Port Lands - (below the high
water mark or on filled foreshore) or on Provincial Highways or the City and
certainly not for private euthanizations)

If half the poundage (6,288) was for euthanization at owners'
requests and the 12,586 lbs.. of pathological waste could even be
substantiated, then the total invoiced amounts to be shared between the
District and the City should only be a MAXIMUM of 6298 lbs.. (12,586-6288)
which would have arrive at a maximum cost of $2,204 for the City and
District at .35c per pound. THIS AMOUNT WOULD BE EXCESSIVE IF THE ACTUAL
STATISTICS IS BASED ON 330 ANIMALS AS THE COST WOULD THEN BE ONLY $1,100 for
BOTH THE CITY AND DISTRICT (3144*.35 =$1,100).

Please note the following extraordinary change in the charge for
pathological waste for similar periods in 2000 and 2001 that has now taken
place

2000
Jan 823 lbs.. $288.05
Feb 1103 lbs.. $386.05
Total 1926 lbs.. $772.10 (The |Van Regional SPCA subsequently agreed
to reducing the 200- invoices by half)

2001
Jan & Feb 98 lbs. $34.30
