Why is
Animal Advocates Society of BC devoting half its time and resources to tracking the BC
SPCA? After several years of doing hands-on animal
rescue, AAS realized that the reason individuals had been doing the SPCA's work for fifty
years was because the SPCA was NOT preventing cruelty, and was NOT doing animal welfare.
The SPCA has said many times that it is an "animal welfare"
organization, (the inference is that it is compassionate and stable), while all its
competitors (groups like AAS), are "animal activists" (the inference
is that we are hysterical and unstable). The truth is that the SPCA is neither and
should be both. We realized that we could go on rescuing animals until we
dropped but we would barely scratch the surface and that we would be doing the SPCA's work
for them (while they got paid handsomely and we became impoverished). We realized
that it wasn't enough to save a few hundred animals when millions were being allowed to
suffer. And so we set out to prove what the SPCA really was and to
force it to start doing true animal welfare and true prevention of cruelty and to become
"animal activists". We spent many years (while never stopping our hands-on
rescue work), getting the evidence that proved absolutely that we were right when we said
that the BC SPCA existed to serve itself - not animals. And that it had been taking
money, possibly millions, for many decades, under false pretences from trusting
animal-lovers. When all the media in BC dismissed our evidence, we built
the Animal Advocates web site and went public. The
SPCA's reaction? It spent thousands of donator's dollars to hire a large law firm to
threaten AAS founder and president, Judy Stone, with personal ruin. Stone defied them,
posting even more shocking evidence and said that she would not stop until the SPCA
reformed. Thanks to the power of the web and AAS's hard investigating, the SPCA was
forced to say it would reform. 106 years of no accountability: As astonishing as it seems, it is a
fact that the SPCA has never been investigated by anybody ever, except AAS. There is
no overseeing body, no watchdog, and no access to information. It is protected from
FOI inquiries by virtue of the fact that it is not a charity quite like the rest of us
because it was incorporated within the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, in
1895. All attempts to find out information by this means have been turned down. So
there has been 106 years of no accountability. No wonder it corrupted. How
