Thanks for this. I recently lost my 16 year old dog Qila. I got her when I was 15 years old, and so we were together for half of my life! 'For Zack' was touching and I can feel the love that was there, and will live on. I can relate. These beings truly are best friends and hold a place in our hearts forever.
Attached is a poem I thought you might also enjoy. My friend, and vet, sent it to me after Qila died. There was no author listed.

They will not go quietly,
the dogs who’ve shared our lives.
In subtle ways they let us know
their spirit still survives.
Old habits still make us think
we hear a barking at the door.
Or step back when we drop
a tasty morsel on the floor.
Our feet still go around the place
the food dish used to be,
And, sometimes, coming home at night,
we miss them terribly.
And although time may bring new friends
and a new food dish to fill,
That one place in our hearts
belongs to them… and always will.
