Strays killed before owners could find, Wilbur the piglet killed, surrendered pets quickly killed... I've seen this and more

In many years of volunteering with the BCSPCA... I've witnessed quite a few surrendered pets be euthanized.. it is a tragedy when you think you are surrendering your long time pet to a well-established animal welfare organization hoping that a home will be found, then for it to be killed... sometimes shortly after. Or having strays just picked up euthanized before the owner could come and claim them. And what I have found more and more upsetting is that they go on telling people not to chain their dogs all the time because it is inhumane, but also never does anything to help that animal as long as it has shelter, food and water. It doesn't really matter if the dog has been physically and emotionally abused or stressed out which is definitely inhumane. Talking to the owners of these pets does nothing....they should not be owning any to begin with if that is what they plan on doing with the animal in their care. I also remember the pig named Wilbur who was a little piglet at the time, then adopted, but had to be brought back due to rental issues, and then was ordered to be euthanized by the shelter manager at that time, just because he was a meat animal and was taking up room in the barn because he was a big pig now... yeah... I remember that one.
