Kamloops SPCA Employee Equates Women Who Are Victims of Violence With Criminals

On February 27, 2004, an AAS researcher called several Interior BC SPCAs. Here is the response our researcher received from staff at Kamloops SPCA. Here is what she reported:

"I talked to Kim at the Kamloops SPCA. When I asked if my friend could board/foster out her dog at the Kamloops SPCA (large husky/lab cross) while she was in a women's crisis shelter I was told: "She would have to surrender her dog to us and we would then try to adopt it out".

I pushed the issue by saying there was no way my friend would want to give up her dog. She just needs somewhere short term for it to stay. The response was "Lots of times people going to prison have to surrender their dogs." Oh my god...quite a comparison huh?

I asked about brochures and mentioned the BCSPCA internet link on Violence. She said "We don't have that here." Kim finally felt very sorry for my friend and suggested I phone the Kamloops Humane Society and perhaps they could help. She was kind enough to even supply their phone number.

We Can Only Conclude That the Violence Link Project is Another Example of SPCA Spin Doctoring
if these transition houses and official women's support groups knew that there really wasn't anything being done by the BCSPCA, they would be more inclined to create something themselves
Thank you AAS. You're saving the public from being fooled again.
