Changes at the Nanaimo SPCA shelter.
The shelter manager, Lorraine Chiorando, who had been working 12 and 14 hour days in a small, overcrowded, airless office for the last 12, or so, years, running a truly "No-Kill" shelter under most difficult conditions, finally, under doctors orders, had to resign with serious bronchial and mental stress conditions.
I believe all this is mostly due to SPCA policies and deplorable shelter conditions.
And now the NO-Kill shelter is no more.
Recently SPCA officials ordered two healthy dogs to be tranfered to the Port Alberni SPCA where they were promptly killed.
Back in 2004, when I still held the chair at the Nanaimo SPCA CAC board, I made serious attemts to initiate a cpital fundraising campaign for the much needed new shelter and I am certain we could have raised the funds for the new building. However the SPCA immediately put a stop to this and they still take the same inaction today, even though the land is ready to be built on. In my opinion major changes are needed before the SPCA will be a true friend of animals.
