Here is a copy of the letter I wrote.
Dear Honourable Ormston,

I am writing to you in regards to the cat torture case involving Jesse Power and Anthony Wennekers. I have read that in your explanation of your decision on the sentencing of these two people you stated that “This was not the worst offence possible.” I have to admit, I really do not know what could be worse than the horrific acts these two subjected that innocent animal to. Animals are like little children to me. They don’t always understand us, they are completely reliant upon us, their health and safety is in our hands but the saddest of all, just like children, they love us even when we beat, starve and treat them as though they are possessions. I remember seeing the first few seconds of this video tape on the news, I urge you to look at the tape again, look into the cats eyes and see her fear, her nervousness of not being sure what will happen to her. If you watch the rest of it, please realize that this was not just an animal but a LIFE that deserves to be protected and respected just as we all expect for our children and ourselves.

This case reminds me of something that happened in Stanley Park in Vancouver when I was a teenager. Someone had gone into the flamingo compound at night and killed every single bird with a baseball bat. Just recently you might have heard that a group of bullies instead of beating up a kid took the dog he was walking hung it on one of the “monkey bars” in the playground and kicked and beat it until it died in front of its owner. We just cannot put up with this sort of thing any longer….it is murder!

I hope that one day more stringent laws will be set down to protect all animal life and that these laws will be enforced to the letter as a reminder to people who commit these crimes that we as a society will not tolerate behaviours such as these.

I thank you for taking the time to read this letter and would ask you for an appeal of the decisions you made in the Jesse Power and Anthony Wennekers case. I really do believe that through education and the law we can help make the world a safer place for all who share it.

Sincerely,

Michele Kleine-Deters
