Animal Advocates Watchdog

The BC SPCA are animal recyclers at present

The BC SPCA are animal recyclers at present. When C.A.M.P. was introduced the goal of proper animal/guardian matching was trumpeted as being an easily managed goal, but here it is over a year later and nothing has changed.

Page 21 of the C.A.M.P. Manual states: "When adopting a dog, we must be aware of the needs of the adopter in addition to that of the dog, to ensure a mutually satisfying relationship. A good quality adoption means a lasting (strong bond) between the dog and the new family."

Why then are so many dogs going to homes and being returned within record time? Why sell a large dog to an older couple who cannot control and walk it, a large dog to a family with very young children, a power breed to a family with small children, or a fearful dog to a first time dog owner with no experience ?
Selling animals this way helps neither the family purchasing the dog or the animal involved who now is even more confused and psychologically damaged.

This is certainly not animal/guardian matching. One of the few parts of C.A.M.P. that would actually help the animals seems to have gone by the wayside and when questioned a manager in one of the shelters replied "We are not to offend the public, if they match the basic criteria of animal ownership we have to adopt out the dog even if we know it won't work".

So much for speaking for those who cannot speak for themselves.

The pet abandonment industry - this is how it works
Our local SPCA shelter has been turning away people who have been wanting to drop off cats.
But if the SPCA doesn't take all unwanted pets, won't worse will happen to them?
