Busting puppymills looks heroic, but what is being done to regulate the dog breeding industry in BC? K in Victoria wants to breed cockers

AAS received the following string of emails between a cocker rescue group in BC and someone (we have identified as K) wanting to buy a breeding cocker.

K is a fair representative of a certain breed of human, almost always illiterate, uneducated, and of low intelligence. That is typically the kind of person attracted to the business of dog breeding. K cannot help being of low intelligence, but the SPCA can help to regulate and control her and the thousands of others doing this in BC. The latest SPCA Animal Sense magazine is bursting with self-satisfied boasting about SPCA puppymill seizures, but no word on stopping or regulating the puppymills and breeders. Legislation to stop puppymills and breeders like K would seriously reduce heroic puppymills busts and the number of abandoned dogs being resold in SPCAs all over BC.

How much longer will the SPCA prefer style over substance? When do we see the request to the Provincial Government for dog breeding regulations?

The emails:
Here is an e-mail conversation I had with a young person who wants to breed cockers with her father.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

hello myname is K and i am looking for a cocker spaniel. I
was
just wondering when you let people adopt theses cocker spaniels do you
allow
them to breed them because thats what my dad and i are looking to do.
If
not if you know of any place or anybody who would allow us to do that
it
would be great if you could help us out. Thank you very much.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

>Where are you located?

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

i'm located in Victoria B.C

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
>
>Please have your father read the website listed here:
>
http://www.pbrc.net/misc/breeding2.html
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Alright i will, but what should i do after. Like would you guys be able
to
let as adopt a dog to breed?

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I told her to read that ENTIRE page...then e-mail me back.

Here is what she wrote back:

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

alright i have read the whole page

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I then asked her if she understood what she had read.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

yes i do
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Then I said, so...you have changed your mind and are not going to breed...right?

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

no i still want to breed my dog is a breeding dog and we are willing to
take
theses chances. My dad wants to breed our cocker spaniels.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

>
>Is he breeding to show the dogs? Is he breeding to improve on the
breed?
>
>Or...are you breeding just to make money?
>
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

well they won't be show dogs and we are not in it for the money. We
want to
improve on the breed because i never really see cocker spaniels for
sale or
anything and i think they are great loving dogs.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
>
>If you breed your dogs, how will you know that they won't have a
genetic
>problem with their eyes...or their hips? What if a puppy owner wants
to return their blind 3 yr old cocker back to you? What would you do?
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

well first we wouldnt just breed them without getting them checked out
first
and if that was to happen i would first say well you kept it for 3
years so
why know complain and if not i would take it i love animals no matter
whats
wrong with them
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

>There is only one Canine Opthalmologist in BC who can check eyes prior
to breeding. Will you be taking your dogs to him for CERF testing?
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

yes i would but you know what i'll just keep searching because this
ain't
getting anywheres and sounds like you guys are against breeders so
thanks
anyways

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I'm not against breeders at all. My best friend is a cocker breeder. What I AM against is casual breeders who only breed to breed. No health teating is done prior to breeding they just breed "cuz they are so cute".

You are both breeding for the wrong reasons.

It is because of people like you AND your father that I am rescuing cockers. I have been busy all year due to casually bred cockers entering rescue for one reason or another.

All I ask is that you spay and neuter EVERY puppy that leaves your home.

We have no rescue centre on the Island and it appears that with you casually breeding there...I will have to expand to the island as in a few years...your breeding will escalate into more dogs in shelters.

Please don't breed. Please keep your cockers as nice house pets and leave the breeding to the ones who know what they are doing.

Oh...to answer your first question...NO...we do not adopt out intact cockers for breeding. If you had taken the time to read our web page, you would have seen that ALL cockers are spayed and neutered prior to adoption.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

well sorry BUT i do not like the way you are wording your emails and you NO
RIGHT saying its people like me and my dad.Its people like you who makes us
breed the animals. whats the difference between a causal breeder and a real
breed like what the hell how are we doing it for all the wrong reasons you
know nothing about us and don't know if we have done this before. You have
no right saying that.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I've been around for a long time and I am well aquainted with reputable breeders.

By the tone of your e-mails to me, you do not sound like one of those.

I expect that you will be insulted. You have absolutely no clue what I am talking about, That is to be expected.

Oh...and I don't make anyone do anything..particularly breed. You will do that all by yourself.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

i will not be recormending your rescue shelter too anyone because i
think
yor a waste of time and no help at all and dont respect people to the
fullest you should... you dont sound like a nice place to be getting
animals
from soo anyways have a
good
night
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
>
>I'm not too worried. A recommendation from you would NOT be a
compliment.

I'm just tired of people like you abusing dogs to make more puppies to
make money.
If you are NOT doing it for the money...try giving them away for free...I doubt you would do that.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

This, I suspect, is the final e-mail from K.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

k first off you no nothing about me soo u have no f***ing right saying
this
sh*t about me and I DO NOT F***ING ABUSE DOGS SO F*** OFF YOU HAVE NO
RIGHT
SAYING THIS SH*T TO ME stop it do not ever email me again bitch
