BC SPCA Policy Statement: Animals in entertainment, and who to write to

As you can read, the BC SPCA is very careful not to anger the wealthy people who support the Vancouver Aquarium by stating unequivocally that animals that are made to perform in front of paying customers are being exploited and that this should not be allowed.

BC SPCA POLICY STATEMENT #28 - ANIMALS IN THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY

The BC SPCA has a responsibility to monitor all aspects of the use of animals in motion pictures, television, videotape and live stage productions in British Columbia.

In furtherance of this responsibility, the Society will:

Seek the acceptance, and voluntary adherence, of all related organizations to the Society's guidelines on the welfare, treatment and training of animals in the entertainment industry in British Columbia;

Advise Producers and Directors in the industry on their obligation to protect the welfare of animals that are used in their productions and assist them in any way necessary to ensure that such use is carried out in a humane way;

Promote respect and humane attitudes towards animals in the entertainment industry.

"All aspects of the use of animals" in the productions noted above shall include: shelters; restraints (e.g. cages, chains, etc.); food and water; medical attention; grooming; handling and training.
